Who Is A Good Candidate For Reshaping?

Anyone who wants their chipped or fractured teeth to be corrected, or wants their teeth to be reshaped in order to create a less crowded appearance to their smiles can have this operation. The reshaping procedure involves very subtle changes to make a big impact, and can be combined with other cosmetic procedures such as veneers.

What Are The Expected Outcomes Of Reshaping?

The outcomes of Reshaping can be analyzed in three main categories: health-related, aesthetical, and psychological.

Health-related Outcomes

Teeth reshaping can improve the appearance of the teeth and enhance a person's smile. It can also make the teeth easier to clean, which can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease. In some cases, tooth contouring may be recommended.

Aesthetical Outcomes

Having irregular tooth/teeth may disrupt the harmony of your overall smile. After reshaping, these irregularities will be corrected and you will have a beautiful, very aesthetically pleasing smile!

Psychological Outcomes

When your teeth aren't up to your aesthetic standards, you may try to hide them, stop yourself from talking or laughing. Veneers will give you a beautiful smile which will eliminate your self-esteem problems and boost your confidence.

How Are The Teeth Reshaping Done?

Reshaping, also called dental contouring, is a procedure where the shape, length or surface of one or more teeth is changed.

Surgery

First your dentist will have your teeth X-rays to evaluate the size and location of the pulps of each tooth and make sure that there is enough bone between the teeth to support the pulps. Your dentist will gently remove some of the enamel with either a laser or drill.

They will trim misshaped areas or excessively long teeth, alter the shapes of badly shaped teeth, which can include the overlapping teeth, they will even them all for a better bite and alignment. After that, the dentist will smooth and polish the teeth. According to the specific case of your teeth your dentist may combine your reshaping with veneers and/or bonding procedures.

Risks and Complications

Every medical treatment comes with a set of risks and complications. Reshaping treatment can have these possible complications:

  • Fragility: The process of removing enamel from the teeth can make them more fragile. This can increase the risk of chipping or cracking, especially if the teeth are not properly cared for after the procedure.
  • Sensitivity: After the procedure, the teeth may be sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks. This sensitivity should subside within a few days.
  • Chipping and Cracking: If the teeth are not properly shaped during the contouring process, or if the patient bites down on something hard after the procedure, there is a risk of chipping or cracking.
  • Tooth Decay: Removing enamel from the teeth can make them more vulnerable to tooth decay. It is important to maintain good oral hygiene after the procedure and avoid sugary foods and drinks to prevent tooth decay.
  • Discoloration: In some cases, tooth contouring may cause the teeth to become discolored. This is more likely to occur if the patient drinks a lot of coffee, tea, or red wine, or if they smoke.
  • Gum Irritation: The reshaping process can sometimes cause irritation to the gums. This should resolve on its own, but if it persists, it is important to contact your dentist.

What To Expect During A Reshaping Recovery?

The First Week

You may experience soreness and discomfort; your teeth may be sore for a few days after the procedure, and you may feel a dull ache in your gums and jaw. This discomfort can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen, or any pain medication prescribed by your dentist. our treated teeth may be more sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, and sweet foods for a short period of time after the procedure. This sensitivity should go away within a few days, if not please let your dentist know. There may be some minor swelling in the gums surrounding the treated teeth. This should go down within a few days. Some minor bleeding may occur in the gums surrounding the treated teeth. This should stop within a few hours after the procedure. You may notice a slight difference in the shape and appearance of your reshaped teeth. It can take some time to get used to the new look, but it's important to remember that the procedure was done to improve the overall appearance of your smile.

Later

After the first week of recovery, you can expect continued healing; your gums and teeth will continue to heal, and you may notice a gradual improvement in the way your teeth feel and look. Reduced sensitivity; your teeth should gradually become less sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. If you still experience sensitivity, please let your dentist know. You should be able to return to your normal activities, including work and exercise. Your teeth will be more prone to wear, staining and even decay than before. Your dentist may recommend additional treatments such as fluoride application, dental sealants or regular check-ups. It's important to keep in mind that while your teeth and gums are healing, please continue to practice good oral hygiene, such as brushing and flossing regularly, and avoiding hard or crunchy foods that can damage your teeth.

Guidance & Support

After meeting with your dentist at their office during your consultation you express your expectations and the dentist checks the condition of your teeth. They will inform you about their professional opinion while taking your expectations and the condition of your teeth into consideration. Then, photos of your teeth will be taken for a 3D simulation. The size, model and color can be decided by you, and you can even choose the color from the tooth color chart. After deciding, on the first operation day teeth will be scraped and if there is a need for an extraction it will also take place on the first day. Temporary veneers will be put on and your dentist will prescribe you with painkillers and antibiotics. You will stay at the hotel for about 4-5 days. During your stay you will be visited by a wellbeing specialist, and if you’re having any problems your dentist will be contacted. After these 4-5 days, your permanent veneer will be applied and it will be all done.
