Chin Augmentation

Worldwide, tens of thousands of people have chin augmentation (mentoplasty) each year and you can be the next. If you have a recessed chin which lacks prominence, you can be a good candidate for chin augmentation.

What is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to improve the bone structure of the chin area. It is generally done with the placement of an implant directly on the bone of the chin. In this way, the implants can give more projection to an underprojected chin and the procedure can define an underdeveloped chin and give more prominence to it.

The goal of this procedure is to enhance the contours like jawline and neck, and therefore improve the overall facial harmony. The placement of implants around the bone of the chin changes the shape of the face and it enhances the harmony of other facial features.*1 For example, the shape of the chin and nose size are related, and chin augmentation can easily be combined and performed together with other procedures such as rhinoplasty, neck lift, and facelift.

What are the Expected Outcomes of Chin Augmentation?

The outcomes of chin augmentation can be analyzed in two main categories: aesthetical and psychological.

Aesthetical Outcomes

Chin augmentation presents a permanent solution for a recessed chin, which offers augmented size and projection. Through chin augmentation, you can achieve a more projected chin which will be in harmony with your other facial features. It can provide balance and better facial proportions. Chin implants help to add definition to your receding chin, while enhancing the overall attractiveness of your face, not to mention that you’ll have a better profile!

Psychological Outcomes

The psychological outcomes of the procedure are as important as the physical ones. For most people, a weak chin makes them feel very self-conscious because an ill-proportioned and a recessed chin can overshadow other facial features, which negatively impact your profile and overall appearance. The chin creates facial definition and plays an important role in the balance of the face. If you are not happy with the appearance of your chin, you can experience serious psychological distress, which can negatively affect your self-confidence and social life. After the procedure, you will have a more positive self-image.

How is a Chin Augmentation Done?

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to change the appearance of the chin and the face. It is customized according to the needs and wishes of the patient.

Anesthesia

This outpatient procedure is typically done with local anesthesia with sedation, but depending on the particular case, it can be performed using general anesthesia.

Surgery

The details of the surgery depend on the patients’ needs and the surgeon’s approach. The surgeons we work with perform several techniques. So, this surgery is unique for each patient. What is suitable for you depends on your anatomical characteristics and your desired goals.

In general, chin implants can be placed through small incisions inside the mouth or below the chin which means no or very less visible scarring.*2 The implants are conical, custom sized and made out of biocompatible material such as silicone which quickly sticks to the jawbone while creating a very natural feel and look.*3 After the implants are placed properly, dissolvable sutures or stitches are used to close the incisions. Chin augmentation surgery typically takes less than one hour.

Risks and Complications*4

Chin Augmentation, as all the other surgeries, have risks to it. But the serious complications are rare. These risks include:

  • Asymmetry
  • Implant displacement: The implant may move out of place before the healing is complete, but after the healing process is done this is not probable. Wearing the chin dressing until the healing is completed will prevent this from ever happening.
  • Bone Resorption: The bone in touch with the implant can erode. The causes of this can be inadequate implant positioning, soft tissue pressure on the implant, wrong placement of the implant, oversized implant, implant’s material as well as the patient’s age and sex. If you choose a highly experienced surgeon, the probability is close to zero.
  • Nerve damage: The mental nerves are close to the surgeon area, if the surgeon is inexperienced, any damage to these nerves can cause loss of sensation in the chin and lip.
  • Extrusion: If implant size is chosen amiss, extrusion can be a complication.
  • Infection
  • Bleeding

What To Expect During A Chin Augmentation Recovery?

The First Week

After the surgery, a chin dressing might be placed to keep pressure on the implant while allowing to improve adherence of the soft tissue to the jawbone and it is generally removed after 1-3 days. Sutures and stitches are removed within 5 days. Swelling and bruising generally subside in about 7-10 days. Most patients state that there is a very little pain after surgery which can also be eased with pain medication. You will be able to return to work and normal level daily activities in about 3-4 days. You should avoid chewing hard foods for about a week. A soft diet might be advised for 1-7 days.

Later

Swelling and bruising will gradually disappear, and they should be difficult to notice after about 10 days. You need to sleep face-up, with your head elevated for 1 to 2 weeks to ease swelling and protect incisions. After one week, you will be able to return to your most daily activities. It is best to avoid tiresome activities for at least two weeks. You should refrain from strenuous exercises for at least 3-4 weeks after the surgery. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will tell you when you are ready. Your results will be close to the final within a month and your final look will become evident after about 3 months. It is very important to follow post-op instructions. Your surgeon will provide a customized recovery plan based on your needs and your level of healing.

Guidance & Support

A wellbeing assistant will visit you in your hotel room every day during the first week after the surgery. We will expect you to be in our clinic for your post-op examination 1 week after the surgery, before you leave Istanbul. We will still follow your recovery process while you are away. Clineca will provide you with complete support and inform you about everything you need to know during your recovery. We will be with you from your consultation to the very end of your recovery.

Problems & Solutions

Chin augmentation can address your cosmetic problems in your chin area. Here you can find answers for different complaints.

In your case, a sliding genioplasty can be a good solution. It is a very effective option for patients who want to correct their chin position. It is mostly done on patients with a weak chin. Sliding genioplasty involves advancing the jawbone without inserting an implant. In a nutshell, the surgeon slides the lower chin forward to produce more chin projection. In a sliding genioplasty, generally, the surgeon uses a surgical saw in order to cut the mandible away from the rest of the chin and move it to correct the receding chin. Foremost, the surgeon pulls down your lower lip and cuts the gum of the lower lip under your bottom teeth, and then the soft tissue is disparted from the jawbone. They use the saw to cut a small line in the chin for reference, which assures the bone stays straight when it is moved forward. Your chin is repositioned, and you can achieve a more harmonious facial profile. However, the details of the surgery depend on the patients’ needs and the surgeon’s approach. If you want further information, please contact us.
If that is the case, you may consider jaw enhancement treatments. It is a nonsurgical chin augmentation method using cosmetic dermal filler injections which do not require anesthesia or stitches, which means no scarring. Cosmetic fillers help to smooth the contours of your jaw, by doing this, it increases the definition of your jawline. It also decreases the jowls and folds around your jawline. By using dermal filler injections, loose skin can be filled in, and a more youthful appearance can be achieved.
Actually, whether you choose a surgical or a nonsurgical option to have your chin corrected, you should not be worried about scarring. In the case of a chin augmentation with implants, the chin implants are usually placed through small incisions inside the mouth, or below the chin, which means very little visible scarring if any at all. If the external approach is chosen, the scar will be very small and under the chin, which will be barely visible because of its location. If you choose the internal approach, the scar will be in your mouth, and it will disappear completely in time. Therefore, even if you choose a surgical option, you’ll have very little to no scarring. On the other hand, nonsurgical options such as dermal filler injections do not require incisions or stitches, which means no scarring.
Sometimes, fat neck is not due to aging but due to a family trait or genetic and if you’re young and your skin is still elastic, neck liposuction may treat your problem. If you want to enhance your jawline by adding definition, you may consider chin augmentation with or without implants. If you are not eligible for a chin surgery because of your age, you may consider jaw enhancement injections. However, if you are under the age of 18, it is best for you to wait until you’re 18 before having a chin implant or a sliding genioplasty because the jawbone is probably still growing, and the thickening of the jawline is not yet complete until the age 18.
If your chin is too large, you may consider chin reduction surgery to achieve a more pleasing contour for your face. It helps to reshape the chin bone and other structural tissues without the necessity of a facial implant. An especially large and prominent chin gives the impression that the nose and other facial features look so small for the face, and chin reduction provides an effective solution to refine facial contour and definition by creating a harmonious profile. During surgery, the surgeon makes an incision inside the mouth or below the chin. Using a special instrument, he reshapes the chin bone and removes the excess bone to proportion the contour. Then the chin is repositioned, and the incisions are closed. In your case, it seems you are a good candidate for a chin reduction procedure, but in the end your surgeon will decide what’s the best option for your case.
In your case, it is strongly recommended that you should avoid facial implants until the time you have retired from boxing because even though a soft silicone material is placed into the pocket overlying the jawbone, a hard punch can split the implant and cause a serious trouble. Unfortunately, in this situation, there is always a risk of a serious problem. Nevertheless, you can discuss your particular case with your surgeon during the consultation. They will recommend the best options for your case.
