Brow Lift

If you are troubled with the drooping appearance of your brows and deep furrows around your eyes and forehead, then it is time for you to consider a brow lift.

What is Brow Lift?

Droopy eyebrows and deep wrinkles on your forehead tell so much about your aging story. They can cause you to look angry, tired, or sleepy when you feel none. Tens of thousands of people have brow lift each year. If you have concerns about having a brow lift, don’t be afraid! You are not alone, and we are here to help you throughout your journey.

Brow lift, also known as forehead lift, is an outpatient procedure which addresses your cosmetic issues from the eyes to the hairline.*1 A brow lift allows patients to get rid of the furrows in the forehead, drooping brows, and apparent frown lines by elevating the eyebrows and removing the heaviness from the upper eyelids. In this way, it restores a more open, alert, and vital appearance to the eyes and face. A brow lift procedure resolves a severe tired or angry appearance around the eyes. It helps to smooth deep creases in the upper part of the face and firm the area for a more youthful facial appearance. A brow lift can easily be combined with other procedures such as facelift and eyelid lift.

What are the Expected Outcomes of Brow Lift?

The outcomes of Brow Lift can be analyzed in two main categories: aesthetical and psychological.

Aesthetical Outcomes

A brow lift can address your cosmetic issues from the eyes to the hairline. It improves the most visible signs of aging (deep wrinkles, furrows) around your eyes and forehead, it elevates your eyebrows by lifting the heaviness from your upper eyelids, creating a more vital, open, youthful, and alert look. Through a brow lift, you look younger and fresher. Your face will be rejuvenated, and unwanted lines and sagging will be eliminated.

Psychological Outcomes

The psychological outcomes of the procedure are as important as the physical ones. For most people, sagging eyebrows, furrowed forehead and frown lines are serious concerns. If you are not satisfied with the appearance of the upper part of your face, you can experience serious psychological distress, which can negatively affect your self-esteem and social life. After the procedure, you will have a more positive self-image. Your newly lifted youthful brows will boost your self-confidence. Don’t forget to take and share photos of your new brows, people on Instagram are going to love it!

How is a Brow Lift Done?

Brow lift is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to change the appearance of the forehead and the brows. It is customized according to needs and wishes of the patient.

Anesthesia

As the first step, you will receive anesthesia. Depending on the particular case, the surgery can be performed using either general anesthesia, or local anesthesia combined with a sedative. In either case, you will sleep through the surgery and will not feel any pain.

Surgery

The details of the surgery depend on the patients’ needs and the surgeon’s approach. So, this surgery is a customized procedure. What’s suitable for you depends on your anatomical characteristics and your desired goals. Your surgeon will help you to decide which surgical technique will best provide your cosmetic goals. Our contracted surgeons perform different brow lift techniques and most common ones are classic/coronal and endoscopic brow lift.

Procedures

Using this method for brow lift surgeries is now quite popular among plastic surgeons. It is less invasive, which can often achieve equally desired results compared to former techniques.

Classic/Coronal Brow Lift

This technique is now out of fashion because of the advance to less invasive techniques, but, in certain cases, it can be necessary to achieve the patient’s desired goals. In this technique, a coronal incision, also known as hairband incision, is used behind the hairline, following the hairline from ear to ear. So, the scars will not be visible. After the incision is made, the skin of the forehead is elevated, allowing to remove underlying tissue and to release the muscles. Then, eyebrows are also elevated, excess skin is excised, and the source of visible creases are smoothened to achieve a more youthful appearance. The incision is closed with sutures, clips, or skin adhesives.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

Using this method for brow lift surgeries is now quite popular among plastic surgeons. It is less invasive, which can often achieve equally desired results when compared to former techniques.*2 In this method, a series of short incisions (each almost less than an inch) are made within the scalp and an endoscope (a pencil like thin tube with a camera attached on its end) and a special instrument is placed through one of the incisions which allows the surgeon to have a clear view when correcting and adjusting the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. Therefore, the surgeon can reposition the muscles, lift underlying tissues and remove excess skin to achieve naturally lifted, smooth and youthful brows. Finally, the incisions are closed with stitches or clips.

Risks and Complications*4

The risks and complications in brow lift differ with the technique used. The surgeon’s experience plays an important role in reducing the potential risks. Beware that with experienced surgeons, the complication rate will be low. Below, you can find the different risks and complications for both coronal and endoscopic brow lift:

Coronal Brow Lift: (data is from 449 patients)

  • Alopecia (hair loss) 2.2%
  • Revision 1.8%
  • Visible scar 1.1%
  • Hematoma 0.4%
  • Chemosis (eye irritation) 0.2%
  • Pruritus (itchy skin) 0.2%
  • Frontal paralysis 0.2%
  • Recurrence 0.2%

Endoscopic Brow Lift: (data is from 7273 patients)

  • Alopecia (hair loss) 2.8%
  • Numbness 2.0%
  • Revision 1.2%
  • Asymmetry 0.7%
  • Pruritus (itchy skin) 0.5%
  • Palpability (being perceivable by touch) 0.5%
  • Edema 0.2%
  • Eye Problem 0.2%
  • Recurrence 0.1%
  • Pain 0.1%
  • Hematoma 0.1%
  • Nerve Injury 0.1%
  • Infection 0.1%

What To Expect During A Brow Lift Recovery?

The First Week

After the surgery, your forehead or head may be wrapped with bandages to minimize swelling and bruising. A small drainage tube might be placed to drain excess fluid or blood. If bandages or a tube are used, they are removed in the following day or two. You will be able to shower and shampoo your hair as soon as they are removed. You should keep your head elevated for 2-3 days after surgery to decrease swelling. Additionally, you may experience some numbness and discomfort, which can be controlled with medications prescribed by your surgeon.*3 Pain or headache can also be controlled with pain medications.

Later

Stitches or clips are removed within two weeks. Swelling and bruising can be most common during the first ten days. They will gradually disappear and should be difficult to notice after about 1-2 weeks. Within two weeks, you will be able to return your normal daily activities. Most patients are able to back to work in ten days. However, depending on your healing process, you may need to take 2-3 weeks off work.

Strenuous physical activity should be limited at least four weeks. Within three weeks, most of the visible signs of surgery will fade completely. Makeup can help to camouflage residual swelling and bruising if they are still obvious. In addition, you will be more vulnerable to sun exposure for several months and exposure to heat and sun should be limited. Always wear a hat and apply sunscreen when you go outside.

Guidance & Support

A wellbeing assistant will visit you in your hotel room every day during the first week after the surgery. We will expect you to be in our clinic for your post-op examination 1 week after the surgery, before you leave Istanbul. We will still follow your recovery process while you are away. Clineca will provide you with complete support and inform you about everything you need to know during your recovery. We will be with you from your consultation to the very end of your recovery.

FAQ

We know you have many questions. Having realistic expectations and deciding to have a cosmetic surgery requires information. Here you can find answers to frequently asked questions about brow lift.

Brow lift is an outpatient procedure which resolves a tired or angry appearance around the eyes and forehead because of sagging, wrinkles, and deep furrows by removing excess skin and elevating the brows.
All surgical procedures have some risks. However, if it is performed by an experienced and talented surgeon, the risk of having a serious problem is very small.
During the surgery, you will not feel discomfort or pain, because local or general anesthesia is typically used. Your surgeon will decide what’s the best option for you and in either case, you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure.
It consists of a series of small incisions made within the scalp and an endoscope is placed through one of the incisions, which allows the surgeon to have a clear view when correcting a nd adjusting the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. Thus, it is a less invasive technique than the classical/coronal brow lift technique.
Local anesthesia is generally used. In some cases, general anesthesia, which makes you unconscious is used. Your surgeon will decide what’s the best option for you.
If you have droopy eyebrows and furrows in the upper part of your face, you are a good candidate for brow lift.
A brow lift surgery can take 1 to 2 hours but if other lifting or cosmetic procedures are included, it might take longer. Your surgeon will give you an estimate about the duration of your procedure.
If bandages are used, they are removed in the following day or two. You may experience some numbness and discomfort which can be controlled with medications. Swelling and bruising will gradually disappear. Within two weeks, you’ll be able to return your normal daily activities.
You should refrain from strenuous exercises and avoid stretching for up to 4 weeks after the surgery. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will tell you when you are ready. Generally, it takes 4-6 weeks.
Eventually, all methods require some sort of incision, which means scarring. However, the incisions are generally very small and made behind the ear and the hairline. So, they will be concealed and will also fade over time.
Endoscopic brow lift uses smaller incisions, which makes it less invasive, but the technique that will be used in your procedure depends on your anatomical limitations as well as your needs. Your surgeon will help you determine the best option for you.
Brow lift surgery can help to balance some level of brow asymmetry.
It is not the age, but the appearance of the brows, what matters. If your brows started to sag, you are ready to have a brow lift.
An upper eye lift procedure removes the excess skin of the eyelids, and doesn’t change the shape or the position of the brows; while a brow lift raises the eyebrows, without touching the eyelids.
As any other surgery, brow lift surgery has some risks. Most common ones include infection, numbness, hair loss.

Problems & Solutions

Brow lift can address your cosmetic problems around your brows. Here you can find answers for different complaints.

A brow lift is a procedure performed to raise sagging brows by returning them back to their natural and refreshed position. It raises the brows to further and reduces the folds above the eyes. It does not touch (cut or remove) the skin of upper eyelids. On the other hand, upper eyelid surgery removes or reduces fat pockets and the excess sagging skin above the eye. So, there are some differences in these procedures, but they can easily be combined and performed at the same operation. Sometimes, one of them may not be enough for you to reach your desired results and you may need both. We cooperate with doctors who are highly experienced at combining these cosmetic surgeries. During your consultation, your surgeon will conduct a physical examination and will recommend the best options for your individual needs.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of unfortunate examples. We really understand your concern. Selecting a talented and an experienced surgeon to obtain a natural and rejuvenated appearance is the key in this procedure. You should look before and after photos that were provided by the surgeon. If you work with a highly experienced plastic surgeon, you get natural, realistic, and desired results. At Clineca, we are also using 3D Imaging System. This technology provides a preview of your lifted brows and expected results before your brow lift procedure begins. Therefore, you can have a general picture in your mind about how your brows and upper face is going to look like after surgery.
Incisions are generally small and positioned behind the hairline, above the ears and continue behind the earlobe, hidden in the natural folds, within the scalp or behind the hairline. Over time, the scars will start to fade, and they will become unnoticeable. Nowadays, endoscopic brow lift technique is now quite popular among plastic surgeons. It is less invasive which can often achieve equally desired results when compared to previous techniques. With the help of advanced surgical techniques and a talented plastic surgeon, scars can be kept to minimum. So, you don’t have to be worried about scarring.
After the surgery, your forehead or head may be wrapped with bandages to minimize swelling and bruising. A small drainage tube might be placed to drain excess fluid or blood. If bandages or a tube are used, they are removed in the following day or two. Stitches or clips are removed within two weeks. Swelling and bruising can be most common during the first ten days. They will gradually disappear and should be difficult to notice after about 1-2 weeks. However, you may still have some swelling and bruising, and you may need to conceal with makeup. Therefore, you may need to postpone seeing your friends for two weeks.
In many cases, the results last 10-12 years. When it is performed by a talented and highly experienced surgeon, your results and improvements may last longer. However, the normal aging process will continue, and your lifestyle and other factors will probably impact the results which may become less visible over time.
Classic brow lift technique is now out of fashion because there are improvements with less invasive techniques such as endoscopic brow lift, but, in some cases, it can be necessary to achieve a patient’s desired goals. Patients who want to achieve a greater elevation and much higher brows with a sharp and dramatic look may prefer this technique. In this technique, a coronal incision, also known as headband incision, is used behind the hairline, following from ear to ear, and then it has longer recovery and scalp numbness. On the other hand, endoscopic brow lift is less invasive which can often achieve equally desired results when compared to classic technique and it also has shorter recovery and less scarring. However, brow lift surgeries are customized according to patients’ needs and your surgeon will recommend the best option for your individual needs. Please contact us for further information and consultation.
After a brow lift procedure, you may need to take 1-2 weeks off work, but within two weeks, you will be able to return your normal daily activities. Within three weeks, most of the visible signs of surgery will fade completely. It is best to avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 4 weeks. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will tell you when you are ready. Generally, it takes 4-6 weeks. It is very important to follow post-op instructions. Your surgeon will provide a customized recovery plan based on your needs and your level of healing.
