Who Is A Good Candidate For Abdominoplasty?

It is not hard to be eligible for an abdominoplasty. If you are reading this, you are probably a candidate!

If you are in good general health, you can have an abdominoplasty. The procedure is suitable for both men and women. Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure. To be eligible, you need to have a stable weight.

If there are resistant fat deposits, if you have stretched abdominal muscles and skin, you may be a good candidate for this surgery. If you had multiple pregnancies and these have negatively affected your muscles and skin, or if you were once obese and now have loose skin and excessive fat deposits in your abdomen, the abdominoplasty may be an excellent treatment for you.

What are the Expected Outcomes of Abdominoplasty?

The outcomes of abdominoplasty can be analyzed in two main categories: aesthetical and psychological.

Aesthetical Outcomes

You’ll have a flatter and firmer abdomen. You’ll have a fitter and younger appearance. Also, stretch marks that are located on the areas of excess skin may be removed or improved. You will get rid of sagging, stretched skin and local fat deposits that are not responding to exercise and diet. Your surgeon will also tighten the muscles in your abdominal wall.

Psychological Outcomes

The psychological outcomes of the procedure are as important as the physical ones. For most people, sagging or deformed appearance of the abdomen is a serious concern. Therefore, strong psychological benefits are expected. You will start to love your body more. Your self-confidence will be boosted.

How Is A Abdominoplasty Done?

Abdomnioplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure performed to change the appearance of the abdomen. It is a complex surgery customized according to needs and wishes of the patient.

Anesthesia

First of all, you will receive anesthesia medications. Depending on the particular case, the surgery can be performed using either general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation.

Surgery

Your surgeon will remove excess skin and fat and repair your abdominal muscles. Then they will create a new opening for your belly button.*1 In the end of the surgery, the incisions will be closed. If you are having a mini abdominoplasty, the part below your belly button will be addressed, and your belly button won’t be moved. There are other variations, too. The surgeons we have agreements with are highly experienced in abdominoplasty procedures. During the consultation, they can inform you about the approach that will suit you the best.

Incisions

There are different types of abdominoplasty procedures. If you are having a standard abdominoplasty, your surgeon will make 2 incisions, one horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and belly button, and one circular incision around the belly button.

Risks and Complications*2

The complication rate differs from people who underwent a bariatric surgery prior to the abdominoplasty and people who did not, where the prior bariatric surgery is found to be an additional risk factor for the complications seen after abdominoplasty. If the abdominoplasty is combined with other aesthetic surgeries, the risk of a complication occurring will further increase. Overall, the complication rate is estimated as 35%.

What To Expect During An Abdominoplasty Recovery?

The First Week

For a few days after the surgery, there will be drains that are placed under the skin to drain excess fluid or blood.*3 These will stay for a few days. There will also be bandages and special garments. Don’t forget to take a photo of you, before the bandages are removed. People like these photos in social media! The first days after the surgery, you will experience some pain, discomfort, and bruises. Pain and discomfort will improve after a few days. Until then, pain can be successfully controlled by pain medication. You will also take antibiotics and anticoagulants. Gentle walking is safe and recommended.

Later

Swelling and bruises will gradually disappear. You need at least 2 weeks before returning to work. However, this period may vary depending on the patient, and the patient’s working conditions. After four to six weeks, you can return to strenuous exercise and demanding physical activities. A few months after the surgery, your recovery will be completed. During your whole recovery period, your surgeon and Clineca will inform you and guide you.

Guidance & Support

A wellbeing assistant will visit you in your hotel room every day during the first week after the surgery. We will expect you to be in our clinic for your post-op examination 1 week after the surgery, before you leave Istanbul. We will still follow your recovery process while you are away. Problems & Solutions

Abdominoplasty is a complex procedure shaped according to each patient’s needs. There are different approaches to solve different problems.

Mini abdominoplasty is basically for patients who have excess lower abdominal skin with or without sagging abdominal wall. If the upper abdomen is in good shape and have no excess skin or slack wall, in this case, there is no need to change the upper abdomen and get the belly button out of the way and therefore no need to make an incision around the belly button. The length of scar may also be shorter. So that the recovery in this procedure is easier than a standard abdominoplasty. If your fat deposits are located below the belly button, you can be a true candidate for mini abdominoplasty. During your consultation, your surgeon would determine the best approach for your body.
If you’re planning to lose a lot of weight, abdominoplasty is not for you. Abdominoplasty is not an alternative to weight loss. You should try other options to lose weight and when you reach your ideal weight, you might consider abdominoplasty for the removal of your abdominal excess fat and skin and tightening of your abdominal muscle.
There are generally no major risks about becoming pregnant after abdominoplasty procedure. However, if you have a plan to get pregnant, then you may consider postponing your abdominoplasty procedure until you are done having kids because pregnancy may adversely affect the results. During pregnancy, abdominal muscles stretch largely. This can change the appearance of your abdomen and lead to undesired results.
If you have some fat deposits in your abdominal region, but you don’t have a loose skin problem, you may consider liposuction for removing your excess fat. Through liposuction, only your fat deposits will be removed from the targeted area. Besides, using liposuction instead of a traditional surgical removal decreases the impact of the procedure and risks of complications on your body. If you have unwanted fat in your abdominal region, and if you are hoping to remove the fat without removing any excess skin, liposuction is the better choice. Either way, during your consultation, your surgeon will give you the accurate information about your situation and he will help you to determine the best option.
During abdominoplasty, some skin parts are removed, so that some of your stretch marks may be removed. But some of them may still be unaffected. If you want to get rid of stretch marks, you should try other treatment methods such as laser therapy, microneedling or microdermabrasion. They are highly effective methods about removing stretch marks on your skin. If your goal is just to get rid of your stretch marks, abdominoplasty should not be considered as an alternative to these methods.
If you have lost a lot of weight and have lots of sagging including the sides and back of your body, you really should consider extended abdominoplasty. Extended abdominoplasty is basically a traditional/standard abdominoplasty with some additions such as contouring of the hips, lateral thighs and flanks. After significant weight loss, there is significant excess skin in the hip area expanding onto the sideways with sagging of the thighs. In this situation, a traditional abdominoplasty will not be able to address excess skin over your hips. That’s why, in your case, extended abdominoplasty would be highly effective to address all of your problems. During your consultation, your surgeon will guide you and help you to decide best option.
Unfortunately, all surgical procedures leave scars. If you want to have abdominoplasty, you should consider this situation before making a decision. The length of the scar is based on the amount of skin being removed. However, this is no matter because the scars are generally located very low on the abdomen which will be covered under your bikini and underwear lines.
