Breast Lift

You are not happy with the appearance of your breast due to sagging? You are not alone. Worldwide, more than a hundred thousand people have breast lift each year.*1 If you are healthy and have realistic expectations, you can be a candidate for breast lift operation.

What is Breast Lift?

Breast Lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed to raise and shape the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the neighboring supportive tissues. The goal is to achieve firmer, youthful and well-shaped breasts. During the operation, the nipples and areolas are relocated to the ideal position.*2 If there is an asymmetry, it is also corrected. In this way, your breasts will be in a better shape and have a more uplifted form.

What are the Expected Outcomes of Breast Lift?

The outcomes of breast lift can be analyzed in two main categories: aesthetical and psychological.

Aesthetical Outcomes

Breast lift can address all kinds of aesthetical concerns about your breasts. Through breast lift, the size, the shape, the asymmetry, and the proportions of your breasts can be changed. You will have perkier, firmer, and uplifted breasts. Your breasts will look better, and you will enjoy fitting into your clothes. It will help your bras and swimsuits to fit more comfortably while looking attractive.

Psychological Outcomes

The psychological outcomes of the procedure are as important as the physical ones. If you are not happy with the appearance of your breasts, you can experience serious psychological distress, which can negatively affect your self-esteem and social life. After having this procedure, you will have a more positive self-image. Your new reshaped, youthful, feminine, and better-proportioned breasts will boost your self-confidence.

How is a Breast Lift Done?

Breast lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to change the appearance of the breasts. It is customized according to needs and wishes of the patient.

Anesthesia

Like every other surgery, breast lift requires anesthesia. Depending on the case and the preference of the surgeon, breast lift is done under either general anesthesia or local anesthesia combined with sedation.

Surgery

The details of the surgery depend on the patient’s needs and the surgeon’s approach. Our contracted surgeons are capable of performing several breast lift techniques. What’s suitable for you depends on your anatomical characteristics and your desired goals, which makes this surgery a customized procedure. After incisions are made, the excess skin and tissue around the problem area will be removed, and then your breasts will be reshaped, lifted and your nipples will be relocated to an ideal position.

Incisions

Incision techniques can vary, and the differences depend on the extent of the incision and the degree of the lift necessary. There are typically three incisions:

  • Donut lift (around the nipple)

A donut lift technique is used on patients with mild to moderate breast sagging, and a circular incision that looks like a donut is made around the areola.
  • Lollipop (a vertical scar down from the nipple)

A lollipop lift technique which offers more room for repositioning the tissue is used on patients with moderate breast sagging and one incision is made around the areola while another is made vertically between the areola down to the breast crease, which looks like a lollipop.
  • Anchor (an incision on the breast crease)

An anchor lift technique is only used on patients who have excessive breast sagging or having a large reduction, and three incisions are made that in the end resemble an anchor.

Risks and Complications*3*4

Complications and their rates vary depending on the method employed. The overall complication rate for breast lift is as low as 1.15%, but not 0. Risks are further increased if combined with other operations.

    The most common complications are:

  • Hematoma
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Areolar herniation
  • Poor cosmetic outcome
  • Changes in sensation
  • Breast pain/tenderness
  • Asymmetry

    Contributor factors to complications:

    Patient related factors:

  • BMI
  • Age
  • Smoking
  • Diabets
  • Medications

    Surgeon Related Factors:

  • Incision
  • Operational procedure
  • Post-operative care

What To Expect During A Breast Lift Recovery?

The First Week

After surgery, your breasts will be covered with bandages or dressings to reduce swelling and to support the new shape of your breasts. Besides that, a small tube can be temporarily placed under the skin to drain excess fluid. These will be removed by your surgeon within the next two to three days after surgery. Your surgeon may recommend you to use a surgical bra to protect the incision and minimize swelling. You may experience some loss of sensation around the incisions, which is normal. This feeling should pass with time. You may feel tired and experience moderate pain following the surgery, but it can be managed through painkillers. You will be able to return to your daily activities within a week.

Later

You may need to take 2-3 weeks off work, but it can differ from patient to patient. It is best to avoid tiresome activities for at least two weeks. You should refrain from strenuous exercises and avoid stretching for up to 6 weeks after the surgery. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will inform you when you are ready. It usually takes around 6-8 weeks. It is very important to follow the post-op instructions given by your surgeon. They will provide a customized recovery plan based on your needs and your level of healing.

Guidance & Support

A wellbeing assistant will visit you in your hotel room every day during the first week after the surgery. We will expect you to be in our clinic for your post-op examination 1 week after the surgery, before you leave Istanbul. We will still follow your recovery process while you are away. Clineca will provide you with complete support and inform you about everything you need to know during your recovery. We will be with you from your consultation to the very end of your recovery.

During the surgery, you will not feel any pain because of the anesthetics. Most of the post-op pain will fade in the first week after surgery. Typically, local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation or twilight sedation, which is a type of intravenous sedation that makes the patient sleepy and calm but keeping them awake and able to follow instructions if needed, are used in this surgery. Your surgeon will decide what’s the best option for you and in either case, you will not feel any discomfort during the procedure.
Mostly, patients report relief from pain within a few days. You might be able to return to normal level daily activities within a week. You can return to your exercise routine after 6-8 weeks in accordance with the instructions given by your surgeon.

You should refrain from strenuous exercises and stretching for up to 6 weeks post operation. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will inform you when you are ready. Generally, it takes 6-8 weeks.
At a certain degree, all methods used in surgeries require some sort of incision, which equals scarring. However, there are techniques to keep the scarring to a minimum and our partner surgeons can perform them very well.
A donut lift technique leaves minimum scar, but the technique that will be used in your procedure depends on your anatomical limitations and your needs. Your surgeon will listen to your desires, examine your breasts and determine the best option for your case.

Problems & Solutions

Breast lift surgery can address multiple problems related to breasts. Here you can find solutions to different problems.

Breast lift is a procedure performed to lift the breasts to a higher position on the chest wall. It provides a more youthful appearance. During the surgery, excess skin is removed, breast tissue is tightened, and sagging is eliminated. By doing this, overall, the breast volume decreases but moderately. Your breast volume will somewhat reduce, but not to an extent that is widely assumed. That’s why you should not worry about the breast volume, you will feel more comfortable, and your breasts will look younger. However, if you want bigger breasts, you may also consider breast augmentation. Breast lift and breast augmentation procedures can be easily combined, and frequently performed together.
If you have small breasts with sagging problem, and you want bigger and firmer breasts, you can consider breast lift with implants. This procedure consists of two breast enhancement surgeries, which are called a breast lift and a breast augmentation with implants. With a breast lift, you can have firmer breasts, while breast augmentation makes your breasts bigger. During your consultation, your surgeon will make a medical examination and recommend you the best option for your case.
If you have large and sagging breasts, you will need two breast enhancement operations: a breast reduction and a breast lift. These two procedures can be easily combined, and they are frequently performed together. Through breast reduction, you will have smaller and lighter breasts while breast lift will give your breasts a better shaped and a more uplifted form. Our contracted surgeons are highly experienced in breast surgeries as well as combining these procedures. If you contact us, our consultants will give you more detailed information about this procedure.
Sadly, all surgeries leave scars, breast lift is no exception. However, with the help of advanced surgical techniques, scars can be kept to a minimum. The length of the scar depends on the incision technique used in the surgery and every patient needs a different method. There are 3 types of incision used in this surgery: donut lift, lollipop, and anchor. A donut lift technique is used on patients with mild to moderate breast sagging, and a circular incision like a donut is made around the areola. A lollipop lift technique which offers more room for repositioning the tissue is used on patients with moderate breast sagging and one incision is made around the areola and another is made vertically from the areola down to the crease below the breast, which looks like a lollipop. An anchor lift technique is only used on patients who have excessive breast sagging or getting a large reduction, and three incisions are made that resemble an anchor. According to your anatomical needs and desires, your surgeon will determine the best method for your case. Either way, you can be sure that the scars will be kept to a minimum, and they won’t bother you.
Most of the patients are able to breastfeed after the breast lift surgery. In rare cases such as breast lift for people with tremendous amount of excess skin, it might be necessary to remove the nipple and place it back as a free nipple graft, but these cases are extremely rare. On the other hand, while it is possible to breastfeed after a breast lift surgery, there is no guarantee. There are too many variables. That’s why, you may want to wait until you no longer will have any children because during pregnancy your hormone levels and consequently breasts can change. It is impossible to predict how different the breasts will become.
A breast lift procedure is designed to create firmer, youthful, symmetrical, and well-shaped breasts. If you have sagging and asymmetry problem, with a breast lift surgery, you can have them corrected. During the surgery, your breasts are raised and reshaped by removing the excess skin and if there is any asymmetry, it is also corrected. Through a breast lift, you can achieve firmer, lifted, well-shaped, and symmetrical breasts.
After a breast lift procedure, you may need to take 2-3 weeks off work, but it can change from patient to patient, and you might be able to return to normal level of daily activities within a week. It is best to avoid tiresome activities for at least two weeks. You should refrain from strenuous exercises and stretching for up to 6 weeks post operation. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will inform you when you are ready. Generally, it takes 6-8 weeks. It is very important to follow the post-op instructions given by your surgeon. They will provide a customized recovery plan based on your needs and your level of healing.
