Breast Augmentation

They say breast implants are unnatural. Well… Breasts, along with buttocks, are the main elements of the female figure. So, it is only natural to have the breasts you like!

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed plastic surgeries, worldwide. It involves the placement of breast implants inside the breasts. Who Is A Good Candidate For Breast Augmentation?

If you are healthy, your breasts have completed their natural development, and you have realistic expectations from the procedure, then you are an ideal candidate for the breast augmentation!

Maybe your breasts lost volume and shape after a pregnancy or a weight loss, or maybe they just changed with time; perhaps one or both of them did not develop properly, or perhaps you had a mastectomy; or it can be just that you don’t like how they look. If you are not happy with the size, volume or shape of your breasts or that you think they are too asymmetrical, then the breast augmentation is ideal for you. If you want to change the way they look, that is a good enough reason to consider breast augmentation.

Remember: Your body, your call.

What are the Expected Outcomes of Breast Augmentation?

The outcomes of breast augmentation can be analyzed in two main categories: aesthetical and psychological.

Aesthetical Outcomes

Via breast augmentation with implants, you can have larger, rounder, and fuller breasts. Any natural breast asymmetry can be addressed through breast augmentation, too. Breast augmentation enhances not only the appearance of breasts, but also the whole contour of the body. Breasts have a central importance to the female figure, and because of this, a talented and experienced surgeon carefully working on them to reshape will achieve a sculpted appearance not only to the breasts but to the whole body.

Psychological Outcomes

Of course, there are important psychological benefits as well. A person who is not happy with their breasts can experience some psychological distress, which can lower their self-confidence and impact their social lives negatively. Having the breasts that fit both your body and your dreams can boost your self-confidence and enhance your self-image, which will make you happy in the end

How Is a Breast Augmentation Done?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to increase the sizes of the breasts. It is customized according to needs and wishes of the patient.

Anesthesia

Like every other surgery, breast augmentation surgery requires anesthesia, as well. Your surgeon will decide if general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation is the more suitable one for your case.

Implants

The essence of breast augmentation with implants is increasing the size and reforming the shape of the breasts by surgically placing breast implants under either the breast tissue or chest muscles. There are two main types of breast implants; silicon gel implants and saline implants. The implants can also differ in shape and texture. Your surgeon will help you choose the best option for you.

Incision

Depending on the patient, the desired result, and the preference of the surgeon, there can be variations to the procedure. The first variable is the placement of the incision. The possible places for the incision are the inframammary fold (the natural fold under the breasts), the periareolar region (the periphery of the areolas), the armpits, and the belly button.

Placement

The second variable is where the implants will be placed. The regions the implants can be tucked in include the region between the mammary gland and the chest muscle, and the region beneath the chest muscle. Each approach has their own advantages and disadvantages; therefore, the decision should be made by an experienced plastic surgeon. Our contracted surgeons are highly skilled in each type of breast augmentation techniques. During the consultation, they can inform you about the approach that will suit you best.

Risks and Complications*1*2*3*4

Breast augmentation with implants, has a long history and for that reason, the risks and complications are brought to a minimum with advancements both in implant materials and the surgical methods. Risks are further increased if combined with other operations. Implants can rupture, but also can last a lifetime. Usual lifespan is estimated to be 15-20 years for implants, and most surgeons advise an implant revision at the 10 or 15-year mark. Overall complication rate for breast augmentation is 1.46%.

    Early complications:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Asymmetry
  • Hematoma
  • Seroma: It’s a build up of clear fluid, not dangerous, but can be painful and uncomfortable.
  • Breast pain/tenderness
  • Poor cosmetic outcome
  • Changes in sensation
  • Venous thromboembolism
  • Pulmonary dysfunction

    Late complications:

  • Implant displacement
  • Implant leak
  • Capsular contracture: scar tissue that is formed around the implant can get tightened. Graded on a scale from 1 to 4, if severe it can require a surgical correction or removal of the implant.

    Contributor factors to complications:

    Patient related factors:

  • BMI
  • Age
  • Preoperative breast volume
  • Smoking
  • Diabets
  • Medications

    Surgeon Related Factors:

  • Incision
  • Implant Texture
  • Implant Shape
  • Operational procedure
  • Post-operative care

What To Expect During A Breast Augmentation Recovery?

The First Week

In the first 3-5 days after the operation, you will experience pain and discomfort. But don’t worry! Your surgeon will prescribe pain medications that will help with pain. Your pain and discomfort will gradually subside. Apart from the pain and acompanying discomfort, you will also experience swelling and bruising. These are normal side effects. Avoid getting tired, exercising and; lifting and carrying heavy objects, but gentle walking is safe and encouraged.

Later

A week after the surgery, during the follow up check up, your surgeon will remove your stitches. 3-4 weeks after the surgery, swelling and bruising will have significantly reduced, and they will continue to get better. At this stage you won’t be having much of a pain or discomfort. 6-8 weeks after the surgery, the scars will start to fade, and you will be able return to most of your regular activities. FAQ

We know you have many questions. Having realistic expectations and deciding to have a cosmetic surgery requires information. Here you can find answers to frequently asked questions about breast augmentation.

You are ready to have a breast augmentation with implants, after your breasts has completed their development and you are in good health.
If you are considering to have children, it is advised to postpone the procedure because pregnancy may adversely affect the result.
Deciding for the right size is not an easy task because there are many variables to be considered. A plastic surgeon who is experienced in breast augmentation can help you to choose the ideal size and also the type of the implants.
You shouldn’t involve in intense physical exercises for at least 6 weeks post operation. Your surgeon will follow your recovery and will inform you when you are ready. Usually, it takes 6-8 weeks.
When performed by an experienced surgeon, breast augmentation does not prevent you from breastfeeding.
There are two approaches: using general anesthesia or using local anesthesia with sedation. In most cases, general anesthesia is used.
A week after the operation, you will start to feel much better. After 6-8 weeks, you will be able to resume all your regular activities. After a few months, most of the recovery will have been completed.
Saline implants require smaller incisions. If they leak, they leak only salt water which is absorbed by the body (yet this can still be problematic). However, they don’t feel and look natural as much as the silicone gel implants.
There is no upper bound for age for this surgery, although you should be in good health so that you can go through the surgery, anesthesia and the recovery. Many women in their 40s and 50s choose to have breast augmentation. If you are healthy, you can be eligible for this procedure.
Yes, of course! However, depending on the extent of the sagging, you may need to have a breast lift procedure combined with breast augmentation.
Because this is a surgery, people who have serious chronic health issues may not be eligible. You should talk to an experienced plastic surgeon to learn that if you are eligible or not.
Where the incisions are made depends on the uniqueness of the individual. The possible locations are inside the breast fold, around the areola, the armpit, and inside the belly button.
No. Although, you must avoid intense physical exercises while recovering. After the recovery is complete, the implants are not expected to be a problem during exercise.
It is one of the possible places for the implants to be tucked in. It means the breast implants are placed beneath the pectoralis muscle (chest wall).
It is the other possible placement for the implants. It means the placement of the breast implants will be in between the breast tissue and the chest muscle.
There is no such requirement. However, it is recommended that they are replaced after 10 years to decrease the chances of rapture and deflation.
They are a type of breast implants nicknamed “gummy bear” after they being teardrop-shaped gel-based implants. They are firmer than the silicone ones, and retain their shape better than the other types. Furthermore, they are also a bit more safe than the silicone ones as in a case of rupture there is no risk of a silicon leakage.
There are many variables that affect the price. You may learn the price for your specific case in a physical or online consultation with your surgeon. If you want to have an estimation, please contact us.
It is probable that you will experience some temporary alterations or loss of sensation after your surgery. In most cases, this lasts for 6-12 months. In rare cases, the changes in sensation can be permanent.
During the procedure, you won’t feel any pain. After the surgery, you may experience some level of pain for a few days. However, this pain is easily controlled by pain medications your surgeon prescribes to you.

Problems & Solutions

Breast augmentation with implants is a cosmetic surgery procedure customized according to the needs of the patient. Here you can find solutions to different problems.

Your surgeon will help you to choose an implant size that will match your body the best. Of course, there are other things to consider. The silicone implants look (and feel) more natural. This is especially true for thin people. Saline implants can cause a “wrinkled” or “wavy” appearance. And the borders of the implants may look unrealistic. Apart from the implant type, where the implant is placed is another important thing to consider. In most cases, placement beneath the chest muscle is the preferred option for thin people. When the implant is placed under the muscle, its borders and the impressions on the surface are hidden, which yields a much more natural look.
Placement of implants under the chest muscle can cause interference with this muscle during movement. Breasts may move while arms are moving. Not to say it involves the surgical manipulation of the chest muscle. If you are competing athletically, or you are very active physically, this can be problematic. Therefore, subglandular placement of the implants that is placing the implants in between the muscle and the breast tissue, can be a better choice for your case.
Sagging is a common problem as many people experience it, whether it is due to aging, weight fluctuations, multiple pregnancies, or genetics, etc. Breast augmentation via breast implants may be an effective treatment for sagging. If the sagging is mild, placement of implants between the breast tissue and the chest muscle provides a lifting effect. Additionally, round breast implants may be a better choice for you. Round breast implants provide better fullness at the top of the breasts. In some cases, though, breast augmentation alone may not be enough to correct the sagging problem. You may need to have a breast lift procedure combined with breast augmentation.
In case you don’t know, in addition to round breast implants, there are also teardrop shaped breast implants. These implants are fuller at the bottom than they are at the top. Therefore, they can provide a much more natural look. However, you don’t have to have teardrop shaped breast implants to achieve a natural result. Depending on the case, round breast implants may provide a better result. An experienced and talented plastic surgeon would determine the best approach for your body and your wishes.
Silicone gel implants provide the most natural appearance and the feeling. Their consistency is very similar to the natural breast tissue. They feel more natural to the touch, and they make you feel more natural while looking very natural as well. They won’t cause a “wrinkled” or “wavy” appearance, as in the case of the saline breast implants.
Leakage is a possibility. Both the silicone gel implants and saline implants may leak. However, if high-quality implants are used, and you follow the instructions of your surgeon, the risk is very small for many years. But of course, the risk will always be there. If you are particularly worried about leakage, choosing the saline implants may make you feel more safe. There is no evidence that silicone gel leakage can cause a serious problem in the body, so if you choose them, don’t worry. On the other hand, saline implants contain only salty water. Even if they leak, salt water won’t cause a rejection reaction from the body, as it does in some silicone leakage cases. Leakage of salt water can still cause some minor problems, but it is definitely not dangerous.
Although it is probable that the procedure may affect the amount of milk your breasts produce, most are able to breastfeed after breast augmentation. If you think you may have a baby in the future, the procedure can be optimized for that. The location and the depth of the incisions carry importance in this case. To avoid any damage to the nerves that affect milk production and secretion, the incisions should be made under the breasts, in the armpit or in the belly button. No patient of our partner surgeons had any problems with breastfeeding after having a breast augmentation via these approaches. Another thing to mention is that the pregnancy can change the size and the shape of your breasts. So, if you plan to have a baby soon, you may want to postpone the surgery.
