    Most people who start researching a facelift are not staring at their cheeks in the mirror. They are pinching the skin under the chin, or turning their head sideways in a photo and disliking what the jawline does. So when a surgeon’s plan or a clinic quote lands in your inbox, the obvious question is whether the neck is included in a facelift or whether you need a separate neck lift on top of it \u2014 and the honest answer depends on two things nobody can guess from a price list: the technique your surgeon uses, and what your own neck is actually doing.<\/p>\n

    What a facelift lifts, and where the neck really begins<\/h2>\n

    A classic facelift works through incisions placed around the ear \u2014 in front of it, along the earlobe, and often a little way into the hairline behind. Through those openings, the surgeon repositions the deeper layer of facial tissue that has drifted downward with age, then trims and settles the skin over it.<\/p>\n

    Because that deeper layer is continuous with the sheet of muscle running down the neck, lifting the face upward and backward does tighten the upper neck and sharpen the jawline to a degree. Many patients see a genuine improvement in jowls and in the transition from jaw to neck without any separate neck procedure at all.<\/p>\n

    What that upward pull cannot reliably reach is the middle of the neck. The two vertical bands you sometimes see when you clench your jaw are the front edges of the platysma, the thin muscle sheet under the neck skin. Fat sitting beneath that muscle, a heavy pad under the chin, or loose skin hanging low in the neck all sit outside the reach of an ear-based incision. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists facelift and neck lift as distinct procedures with their own incision patterns, and that separation exists for a practical reason: reaching the centre of the neck usually means a small extra incision hidden under the chin.<\/p>\n

    \ud83d\udccb The wording matters more than the label<\/strong> Surgeons use "facelift" loosely. For some it means face only; for others it routinely includes neck tightening and is described as a face and neck lift. Rather than asking whether the neck is "included", ask whether an incision under the chin is planned and whether the neck muscle will be tightened.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

    Signs your neck needs its own operation<\/h2>\n

    During a consultation, a surgeon looks at your neck from the side and from below, asks you to swallow, and asks you to tense the muscle. That short examination tells them whether the problem is skin, muscle, fat, or all three \u2014 and whether an ear-based lift alone will be enough.<\/p>\n
